Ipsos Mori pollster: 'Theresa May can still scrape home... but she needs a major upset'

The Ipsos Mori poll suggests May will win 314 seats

Theresa May's election gamble looks to have backfired

Thursday, June 8, 2017

A pollster with Ipsos Mori says Theresa May can still get out of jail, after his company's exit poll suggested she will fail to win a majority.

But Ben Page said the Prime Minister needs "everything to go in her favour for the rest of the night, or there's a major upset with the exit poll."

The Ipsos Mori exit poll earlier suggested the Tories will win 314 seats - 12 short of an overall majority and 15 short of the number David Cameron won in 2015.

In an attempt to explain the shock prediction, Page told Julia Hartley-Brewer that  "once she [May]  came into contact with the voters outside the very controlled environments she has worked in... she was found not to be natural, not to be authentic.

"Jeremy Corbyn, to everyone's surprise and despite some problems with his shadow home secretary, came across as very reasonable."
