Police in Brazil have confirmed that the head of the Olympic Council of Ireland, Patrick Hickey, has been arrested as part of an investigation into illegal Olympic ticket sales at the Rio games.
Hickey is suspected to have illegally passed tickets on to touts, who then sold them at high prices. A man was also caught with 800 illegal tickets in Rio a few days ago.
Brazilian media have said they believe his arrest is related to Kevin James Mallon's arrest on the day the Olympics opened. Mallon is the director of THG Sports, a company which is alleged to have sold illegal tickets. They have denied wrongdoing.
Police have also claimed Hickey tried to escape when authorities tried to arrest him. However shortly after he was arrested, he was taken ill and received medical attention.
