A woman who converted to Islam and also owned materials about Isis has attacked police in west Germany with a utility knife, according to reports.

Police were called to her apartment in Mülheim an der Ruhr, North Rhine-Westphalia on Sunday morning, as she had started throwing furniture out of her window.

After police asked her to open the door, she refused and continued throwing things out of the window. Police then kicked down her door, according to news website the Local.

The 53 year-old woman then shouted "Allahu akbar" at the officers, whilst making stabbing motions holding a knife, coming towards the police.

Officers overpowered the woman with guns and pepper spray. She was injured during the incident and then taken to a psychiatric clinic.

It is still not clear why she was throwing the furniture out of the window.

Flags were found inside the woman's apartment which reportedly demonstrated her support of Isis. She was born in Thuringia, a state in central Germany, and had converted to Islam.

A police spokesperson said she had been known to police previously for Islamist-motivated crimes.
