It is a disgrace for anyone to say the threat level has been raised to critical in order to get Theresa May more popularity, according to a former counter-terrorism detective.

Doctor David Lowe made the comment after some have come up with theories suggesting the threat level was raised to make Theresa May look strong and powerful in the run-up to the general election.

The lecturer told Julia Hartley-Brewer that the decision to raise the threat level wasn't the Prime Minister's decision alone, and it would have been wrong if she ignored advice from people in security.

He also believes that perhaps there should have been alarm bells ringing earlier about Salman Abedi, as he had been reported to authorities before, so now the surveillance system may be reviewed.

But Lowe added that the situation with Abedi is a little different to previous attacks, as his father and brother have been detained.
