A “violent and controlling” man has been jailed after he assaulted his ex-partner and was found in possession of a large kitchen knife.
Thomas Eastwood, 19, had followed his former girlfriend down the street in Sunderland weeks after they split up earlier this year.
He was convinced she had been texting other men and so snatched her phone and hit her when she tried to take it back – he then demanded she left with him.
An officer from Northumbria Police saw the incident unfurl and took the victim to a safe location. She later revealed that she had been subjected to controlling behaviour by Eastwood throughout their relationship.
Eastwood was tracked down a short time later, when police discovered a large kitchen knife in his coat pocket.
He had taken the weapon with him to a supervised visit to see his baby daughter.
The defendant was today sentenced to 16 months behind bars after admitting assault, possessing a knife and coercive behaviour.
PC Simon Cammack, who investigated the case, said: “Thomas Eastwood is a violent and controlling individual who left his ex-partner terrified as he confronted her in broad daylight and assaulted her in the street.
“He could not accept that their relationship was over, and became enraged after believing that she had been in communication with other men.
“His selfish and thoughtless behaviour almost beggars belief.”
