James Mattis is calling reports he contradicted Donald Trump "ludicrous."
The US Secretary of Defense was referring to media reports which came to light in the wake of a press conference given at the Pentagon on Thursday (August 31).
When asked if a diplomatic solution to the situation with North Korea had been ruled out following a tweet from the US President, Mattis responded by saying America was never out of diplomatic solutions - a stance which appeared to contradict Trump's earlier hawkishness.
In a subsequent press conference, however, Mattis denied contradicting Trump, saying the remarks had been "widely misinterpreted."
Mattis explained a 'diplomatic solution' could mean anything from economic sanctions to action by the United Nations, and said if he were to say anything different to Trump, it would be seen as contradiction.
The tension between North Korea and America continues to rise as the former conducts missile tests.
