Jason Donovan popped into the talkRADIO studios to chat with Paul Ross about his upcoming musical Million Dollar Quartet.
The actor portrays record producer Sam Phillips.
"It's about Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins," he told Paul. "It revolves around one day when they all came together [December 4th 1956] in the record company some of them were signed to.
"I'm not singing, but I portray this larger-than-life character.
"He [Sam Phillips] was trying to make records which would sound like one thing, but be perceived in another way."
Donovan told Paul that he had originally put acting to one side.
"I did get offered quite a number of films in the early 90s, which I turned down," he said. "Probably I should have pursued those things, but I was more excited about the prospect of becoming a pop star, which eluded me.
"I was watching my girlfriend at the time [Kylie Minogue] scoring all these number one hits around the world, and I got a little bit jealous.
"I wanted this for myself and it came true. I put acting on the backburner, but I do think as a long distance run, it would have been a smarter idea to have invested some time in it."
