John McDonnell has said that he thinks the next Labour leader should be a woman but that Jeremy Corbyn “will be the leader” as they go into the next election.
Mr McDonnell, the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer told talkRADIO’s Political Editor Ross Kempsell : “Jeremy and I work together. There are none because we have worked together for over 35 years.
“He will be the leader as we go into the next election.
“We will win the next election and he will serve a number of terms.
“I have said already whoever is the next leader, I think it should be a woman, and we have got the new generation coming through who are terrific.”
He added: “Half of our Shadow cabinet, which has never been done before, are women.
“On that basis I am really confident that we will be able to select a woman as a leader.”
‘Got each other’s backs’
Talking about working with the Labour leader, Mr McDonnell said “they always have each other’s backs”.
He said: “We work together closely, and we have done for 35 years.
“We have always got each other’s backs.”
This comes as Labour hosts its annual Party Conference in Liverpool, which runs until Wednesday.
