talkRADIO’s Julia Hartley-Brewer has clashed with a Labour councillor after she branded his cabinet a “bunch of idiots” for opposing the UK’s plan to reopen schools.
The government wants to gradually send primary school children back to the classroom from June 1 but Bury council told its schools this week that they would not reopen.
The local authority said the plan would pose and “unacceptable risk to pupils, staff and communities of vulnerable people”.
Julia labelled its members a “bunch of idiots” and said they were ignoring advice from the World Health Organisation, as well as medical and scientific experts in the UK.
Tamoor Tariq, the council’s cabinet member for children’s services, schools and families demanded Julia apologise for her remark in a heated debate this morning.
He said: “Have you had conversations with headteachers? Have you spoken to teachers? Have you spoken to teaching unions? Have you spoken to parents?
“I think the answer would be no. I have and they have told me categorically they are not in support of the government’s plans.”
The breakfast show host said she had spoken to “all of the above” and stood by her criticism.
“If you’re ignoring [scientific advice] because some parents and teachers might not like it, then yeah, you’re a bunch of idiots,” she said.
