The father who was fined for taking his daughter out of school for an unauthorised holiday clashed with Julia Hartley-Brewer over children's attendance at school on talkRADIO this morning.
The Supreme Court has upheld a fine on father Jon Platt for taking his daughter out of school for a week-long holiday. Platt had argued the holiday should have been permitted as his daughter's attendance was good.
Julia argued against Platt, saying "Disney World isn’t an educational holiday" so it could have happened out of term-time. Platt hit back, claiming he has seen evidence in a report which proves term-time holidays are beneficial, and people should "respect" his decision.
Julia then claimed taking children out of school affects other children in the class, as the teacher spends time helping them catch up when they're back, she also said the lesson Platt is teaching his children "is we get to do what we want when we want and to hell with the rules."
However, the father argued he was teaching his children to stand up for what they believe is right, adding, "the most heinous things" that have happened in history occurred when people followed the rules, rather than broke them.
