Julia Hartley-Brewer: 'The amount we spend on foreign aid is a nonsense and must stop'

Julia Hartley-Brewer says the UK should cut foreign aid

Monday, July 3, 2017

Julia Hartley-Brewer has called for foreign aid to be cut in order to fund increases in public sector pay.

She made the comments during an interview with Conservative MP Nigel Evans, as they spoke about the growing calls on Prime Minister Theresa May to lift the public sector pay cap.

The talkRADIO presenter said: "I accept the whole 'charity begins at home' thing. I’m very much of the view that we have a duty to help out people in poorer nations.

"[But] it is quite clear by now, surely, that £13 billion is an absurd amount of money. No other Western countries are spending anything like this sum of money, this percentage of their GDP, it’s a nonsense - it’s got to stop.

"If you half that overnight you could pay for all of the pay rises in the public sector you want to."
