Outgoing cabinet member David Gauke shared a doctored photo of himself and ex-leadership contender Rory Stewart to mark his resignation day.
The picture depicts the Justice Secretary and International Development Secretary - who is also resigning - with wrinkles and grey hair, created using an ageing app.
He accompanied the photo of the elderly pair with the caption: “A few ministers leaving government today. Some of us hope to return…one day #BRB”
The joke picture has over 1,000 likes and has been retweeted 159 times.
It was met with a mix of comments, both praising and criticising the pair for stepping down.
Mr Gauke, who is MP for South West Hertfordshire, threatened at the weekend to resign from his post if Boris Johnson became Prime Minister, and confirmed the move after the result was officially announced yesterday.
Both he and Mr Stewart, the MP for Penrith and The Border, have said they could not serve under Mr Johnson due to disagreements over his approach to Brexit.
Mr Johnson will enter Downing Street this afternoon following his overwhelming victory in the Conservative leadership contest.
One Twitter user said: "You leave with humour intact and the admiration of people from across the political spectrum," while another simply replied: "Good riddance."
Others were left confused by the new looks, with one person tweeting: "You both look rather elderly. Was this Photoshop?".
