The North Carolina governor has declared a state of emergency in Charlotte, whilst a protestor is in a critical condition after being shot during a fresh night of unrest.

The protestor is on life support and was shot by another civilian, according to the city, which described the incident as a "civilian on civilian" shooting.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department also said four police officers were injured as the violence continued over the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott by police.

Riot police have used tear gas, rubber bullets and flash-bang grenades on the protestors in an attempt to disperse them, after they started throwing fireworks and debris at officers.

Several journalists have also reportedly been attacked during the demonstrations.

National Guard and state highway patrol troopers are being sent to assist police as unrest continues.
