Labour MP Keith Vaz has quit as chairman of the House of Commons Home Affairs Select Committee in the wake of rent boy revelations, saying: "Those who hold others to account must themselves be accountable."

Explaining his decision to step down, Vaz said: “This is my decision, and mine alone, and my first consideration has been the effect of recent events on my family.”

It was reported over the weekend that Vaz paid for two male escorts at his North London flat last month, leading to his resignation as chair of the Commons Home Affairs Committee.

Claims were also made that money was paid into an account used by one of the escorts by a man linked to a charity set up by Vaz.

However, some have questioned the morality of publishing the story in the first place, as questions have been raised over whether it was in the public interest and how the report was put together.
