Kim Kardashian West has met with Donald Trump to ask him to pardon a woman in prison for a first-time drug offence.
Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old grandmother, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for a non-violent drug offence in 1996.
Despite being eligible for President Barack Obama’s Clemency Program in 2014, she was denied it.
Kardashian West is funding a new legal team for Johnson and has asked her lawyer, Shawn Holley, to look at the case.
Trump tweeted that the pair had a ‘great meeting’, and Kardashian West has also been discussing the case with his advisor Jared Kushner.
She also tweeted birthday greetings to Johnson, who had her birthday yesterday,
Johnson’s family say she’s been involved in a number of programmes from jail, including working in the prison hospice.
Activist Amy Povah has also been campaigning for Johnson’s release since 2014, and has a dossier of over 70 signatures from organisations that support her release. This information may also be submitted to Trump.
It is his decision whether to grant the pardon, and the outcome of the meeting is currently unknown.
