Labour MP Naz Shah 'deletes unfortunate tribute to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela'

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has died at the age of 81

Labour MP Naz Shah has reportedly deleted a tweet which paid tribute to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela using a controversial quote.

The tweet allegedly included an image which read: "Together, hand in hand, with our matches and our necklaces, we shall liberate this country."

She captioned it "RIP Winnie Mandela :(," according to Guido Fawkes.

However, 'necklacing' means to place a rubber tyre around someone's neck which is filled with petrol and setting it alight, which causes a long, painful death.

Madikizela-Mandela died yesterday (April 2) at the age of 81 "surrounded by her family and loved ones" after suffering a long illness.

She was the former wife of Nelson Mandela and both had been jailed as they fought against apartheid, the BBC reported.

She became a symbol of the anti-apartheid struggle and crowds of people went to her home after the news of her death broke to mourn.
