The Labour Party has put up a long-standing left-wing MEP to contest the Manchester Gorton by-election.

Labour representative Azfal Khan beat four local councillors to earn the chance to battle it out for the seat - and face off against veteran politician George Galloway, who will stand as an independent.

Khan, who has been the MEP for North-West England since 2014, has trained as a solicitor and served on the European Parliament's sub-committees for security and defence.

The full list of candidates in the Manchester Gorton by-election is as follows:

Afzal Khan - Labour

George Galloway - Independent

Jess Mayo - Green Party

Jackie Pearcey - Liberal Democrats
