A Scottish man has been in court over a bizarre 'Nazi' video featuring his girlfriend's dog.

Mark Meechan filmed the pug, called Buddha, lifting its paw as he recited the Third Reich mantra "Sieg Heil", in an apparent parody of a Nazi salute.

In the video, which can be seen below, Meechan can also be heard asking the dog if it wants to "Gas the Jews", while the animal is filmed in front of a screen showing a documentary on Adolf Hitler.

Police were alerted to the video, which has been viewed over 2.8 million times, following a string of complaints, and Meechan has faced hate crime allegations at Airdrie Sheriff Court.

Prosecutors claim that the material could cause fear and alarm and stir up hatred on religious grounds, according to The Daily Mail.

However Meechan maintains the video was a joke on his girlfriend.

At the start of the video, Meechan says his girlfriend is "always ranting and raving about how and adorable her wee dog is," so he wanted to "turn him into the least cute thing I could think of, which is a Nazi."

He also released a series of subsequent videos attempted to explain his motivation for the original clip. One of the videos said: "I am not a racist at all, anybody who knows me could tell you that.

"I'm freaked out because everyone's going to actually think that I hate Jews now and I don't at all. I'm kind of panicked about it.

"Honestly, I don't hate anyone, the whole purpose of this was just to annoy my girlfriend."

The trial has been adjourned until later this year.
