At least 50 people are reported to have been killed and 100 injured after a gunman opened fire in Las Vegas.

The gunman is believed to have opened fire on revelers attending a country music festival in the late hours of Sunday evening [October 1], near the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino.  

The suspected shooter has reportedly been identified as Stephen Paddock. 

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) had formely said the suspect was a white male in his 60s who was living in a retirement community.

Images on social media show people fleeing the scene in their hundreds, while what sounds like gunfire can be heard in some videos.

The authorities raced to the scene, and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department confirmed it was investigating reports of an active shooter in the area.

However the gunman has now been shot, and there are no more reports of active shooters.

A Nevada sheriff has confirmed that one on-duty police officer is in a critical condition and another has been injured in the shooting.
