Las Vegas shooting: 'Nothing will change on gun control because Trump's party gets so much money from the NRA'

Las Vegas shooting: 'America is awash with guns, everyone who wants one has one', says professor

Peter Squires spoke to Julia Hartley-Brewer about gun control in the wake of the shooting in Las Vegas

A leading gun expert has said America is "awash" with firearms because lobbyists maintain a stranglehold on Donald Trump's Republican party.

Peter Squires was speaking to talkRADIO after gunman Stephen Paddock killed at least 59 and injured more than 500 people in Las Vegas on Sunday, firing down on a county music festival from the 32nd floor of the neighbouring Mandalay Bay Hotel.

Squires, who is due to attend a conference on gun control in Las Vegas and has written two books on the subject, said nothing is likely to change - as the pro-gun National Rifle Association donates a huge amount of money to the Republican Party, pumping a reported $30 million into Trump's election campaign last year.

Squires said: "America is awash with guns, everyone who wants one has one.

"The only way the industry can convince them to buy more is to make them more lethal, more accurate, more rapidly deployed.

"There’s a very powerful lobby, four million strong - the NRA that’s closely connected with the Republican Party and also driven by the marketing needs by the American gun industry.

"While there is that stranglehold and the money on the Republican Party, it’s hard to see much traction."
