Andrew Mitchell has condemned Russia for "acting with impunity" in Syria and using its status as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council to avoid war crimes investigations.

The MP for Sutton Coldfield, who has been critical of Vladimir Putin and Russian actions in Syria in previous interviews, lambasted the international community for allowing Russia to veto any attempts to be held accountable and insisted they need to stand up to the country.

Mitchell highlighted the plight of the civilians in Syria, who face bombardment from coalition forces in the battle to free Mosul from Islamic State, and insisted that they be defended from all forms of attack, including "Syrian helicopters and Russian jets."
