Lord Nigel Lawson has claimed that under Theresa May's leadership, the UK could become "a colony of the EU, governed by the EU".
The Conservative peer appeared on the breakfast show to discuss the Prime Minister's Brexit plan, which he branded "the worst of all possible worlds".
"The deal being cooked up is totally unacceptable. It's the worst of all possible worlds," he told Julia Hartley-Brewer.
"The result of the referendum was the British people deciding that they wanted Britain to become, once again, a free independent, self-governing democracy.

"Far from being self-governing, this would make us not strictly speaking a member of the EU, but something even worse - a colony of the EU, governed by the EU. That's not what the British people voted for. That's not what we want."
Lord Lawson added that the country needed to "abandon this disastrous May surrender" and instead make a "clean break" from the EU and trade on WTO terms.

"There's no way the EU is going to give us a better deal. The EU have welcomed the continuous abject surrender of the government, led by Theresa May, and it is not going to give us anything," he said.
"There's no way a good deal is achievable on a bilateral basis with the EU. It might be after we've left we can then go as a self-governing country and say look, how about talking, after a decent interval and passions have subsided."
