A man has been arrested after beheading his own sister in front of neighbours, after she reportedly pleaded for her life.

The 54-year-old cut his sister's head off with a kitchen knife outside their home in southern Kaohsiung city, Taiwan, according to police.

Police said that the pair had been arguing before the incident over a trip to the hospital, according to The Express Tribune.

The man, identified by family members as Lin, was said to have been taking care of the woman in their home for many years as she was mentally ill.

She was meant to go to the hospital this morning (May 18) but police said she had refused to go, causing the argument.

Local media claimed the woman was kneeling on the floor and begged for her own life before she was attacked and beheaded.

The news comes after a man was jailed last week for beheading a three-year-old girl in public in Taiwan.

The girl's mother and passers-by had tried to stop the attack, but he pushed them out the way.

He claimed he was hallucinating at the time and avoided the death penalty because he has schizophrenia.
