A Japanese man has been arrested on suspicion of trespass after local authorities found him in a loft above a public toilet in a park in Usuki.

The police were tipped off to 54-year-old Takashi Yamanouchi's presence in the loft by a local electrician performing maintenance work.

The police subsequently discovered he had been living in the loft for almost three years, with all the necessities for a flat - like an electric heater and gas stove.

The authorities believe he got in after scaling the walls and accessing an opening on the roof.

The discovery of Yamanouchi prompted a search of other such spaces around the city to check for other squatters.
