Man arrested for 'driving at crowd' in Antwerp

Thursday, March 23, 2017

A man has been arrested in Antwerp on suspicion of driving a vehicle into a crowd, it is being reported.

Police have said the man drove into a packed shopping district at high speed. It has also been reported weapons were found in the car but this has not been confirmed.

"At about 11am this morning a vehicle entered De Meir at high speed due to which pedestrians had to jump away," a police spokesman said.

Local media have reported that the man is of north African descent and a radicalised Muslim, but again there is no official confirmation of this news.

A bomb squad has been sent to the area and the scene has been cordoned off.

The alleged incident comes just a day after the terror attacks in London, which left four dead and forty injured.

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attacks in London, although suggestions of their involvement have been disputed by Quilliam researcher Jonathan Russell in an interview with talkRADIO.
