A man has died after a ticket machine exploded at a train station in Germany.

A police spokesman said police arrived at the scene at around 4:20am this morning (March 21), due to a loud bang being heard at Dortmund-Scharnhorst station.

Police found a seriously injured man near the exploded ticket machine on the platform. Although attempts were made by witnesses and an emergency medic to revive him, he died at the scene.

A postmortem is to be conducted on the 31-year-old's body today (March 21), but the prosecutor’s office believe the man died as a direct result of the explosion, according to The Local.

Another man aged 26, was also arrested at the scene and questioned by police, he claims he met the victim by chance at the station.

Many trains were disrupted between Dortmund and Hamm due to the incident.
