A clown has been killed in New Jersey after being shot late last night.

Police in Newark were called just after 10:30 p.m. EST to Oraton Parkway after reports of a shooting.

When police arrived they found a man in a clown costume shot in the head and in a critical condition. The man, named as Carlos Mendoza, was later pronounced dead in hospital.

A Newark Police Department spokesman said a silver SUV, driven by an African-American male, pulled up alongside the clown, got out, and fired several shots. They are now actively searching for this man's location.

He went on to say that he doesn’t know why people are dressing in clown outfits, but suspects fear to be a factor across the city.

This is the latest in a series of disturbing incidents where people have dressed up as 'killer clowns' in an unnerving trend which has swept across America, leading people to describe it as a 'clownpocalypse'.
