A man who risked his life to save an elderly woman who was crossing a railway line in China has had his leg amputated.

Xu Qiankai works at Rongchang railway station in Chongqing and earlier this month whilst he was on a train, he spotted the woman crossing the tracks, China Daily said.

He informed the driver of the train to stop and also whistled in the hope this would attract the woman's attention and get her to stop.

However, she kept moving forwards so he made the quick decision to jump from the train and push her out of the way.

Although the woman escaped with just minor bruising, the train crushed Qiankai's leg.

He was then taken to hospital and his leg was amputated.

The woman and her family have now visited the 29-year-old man in hospital to express their thanks. Local residents have said the woman finds it difficult to hear.

The director of Rongchang railway station has said medical bills for Qiankai are to be paid by the train station.

Thepaper.cn reported that the man has been voluntarily working at the station since 2008 and was previously in the army.
