Baptiste Dubanchet plans to make the trip on a catamaran

A Frenchman is going to attempt to cross the Atlantic on a catamaran, eating only expired produce.

Baptiste Dubanchet is attempting the trip in order to raise awareness of how much food is wasted in Europe.

He will set off from Paris on January 6, starting out on a bike ride to the Atlantic coast before getting on the catamaran.

Dubanchet has set a target of reaching New York in three months' time.

His diet will consist only of lentils, rice and honey. If that doesn't sound too bad, well, all the produce went out of date years ago.

The lentils expired in 2008, the rice in 2011 and the honey was made in the 1960s.

He told radio station France Bleu:  "I want to show that there are products which are never off and never make us sick if we preserve them properly."

Dubanchet used crowdfunding to finance the project, and has so far raised €3,000 (£2,600).
