A man was shot dead in Vienna near the Iranian ambassador's residence last night (March 11), after stabbing a guard with a knife.
A spokesperson for the police told AFP the 26-year-old man "died on the spot" when his victim started shooting, according to The Local.
Harald Soeros said the soldier tried to protect himself by first using pepper spray against the man but then fired his gun four times at the least.
Although the matter is still being investigated, Austria's Ministry of Defence said at the moment it seems the guard did follow the rules in his actions, the APA agency reported.
Police have also said it is not yet clear why the man started to attack the soldier, who has been left with a wound on his arm.
A spokesperson for the defence ministry said the injured soldier had been taken to hospital for treatment.
Police presence has now been increased around diplomatic buildings in the capital due to the atack.
There have recently been several knife attacks in the city, as only a few days ago a couple and their daughter were severely injured in a knife attack.
