Officers in riot gear have carried out a controlled explosion in the south Manchester district of Fallowfield while raiding a flat on the border of Whalley Range and Chorlton.

Fallowfield is believed to have been home to Salman Abedi, the 22-year-old man suspected of perpetrating last night's attack.

The explosion was reportedly carried out by armed police, and pictures were published on Twitter reportedly showing its aftermath.

The flat raid took place on Royston Court, Carlton Road at around 12.20pm. Police told the public to keep away from the area as a large law enforcement presence was sent to the scene.

The two areas border West Didsbury, the leafy suburb which was subject to police raids in the wake of the Westminster terror attacks in March.

The events have since been confirmed by Greater Manchester Police.,
