Manchester United transfer target Antoine Griezmann has apologised for a controversial photo which saw him 'blacked up' for a party.
The Atletico Madrid player posted a photo of himself blacked up as an American basketball player, with the caption '80's party." The costume was apparently a homage to the Harlem Globetrotters.
However the photo was criticised by several people, including MP David Lammy, who tweeted: “There are so, so many different options for an 80s party, or a night out at the darts for that matter, that don’t involve blackface.
“I can’t believe we’re out here in 2017 saying don’t dress up in blackface.”
Griezmann first reacted defensively to the criticism of , saying “Calm down friends, I’m a fan of the Harlem Globetrotters and of this great era... It’s a tribute."
However he has now issued a full apology, saying: “I recognise that’s it’s insensitive on my part. If I offended some people I’m sorry.”
Griezmann has become one of the most widely coveted players in the world over recent years, and was pursued by United over the summer.
He eventually turned down the chance to move to Old Trafford, but United continue to be linked with the player, who reached the final of the Champions League and European Championships in 2016. Spanish giants Barcelona are also thought to be interested.
