A school in Massachusetts has issued an apology after a photo was shared online which appeared to show a young black girl on a leash.
A teacher at Mitchell Elementary School in Bridgewater posted the photo onto the internet, which had been part of a specific lesson about 17th century attire.
However, the image provoked fury from parents, who voiced their complaints on social media.
Now, the Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School District has issued a statement to apologise.
The kids had been demonstrating the clothing as part of a presentation, focusing on an article of clothing called a leading strings which was used to help children to keep safe as they learned to walk.
The organisation's superintendant, Derek Swenson, said without context, the picture could have been perceived differently to what it was, and said the school had not meant to demean any individuals or groups.
