Melania Trump is reportedly trapped inside her Hamburg hotel as the G20 protests escalate.
The wife of US President Donald Trump was forced to miss a key spouses' tour during the global leaders' summit, as protesters clashed with police in the German city.
Stephanie Greshman, spokeswoman for the First Lady, said police were unable to secure the proceedings to allow Melania to leave her hotel.
“She was prevented from participating in today's spousal program, which she was looking forward to,” Grisham said in a statement.
Officers donned riot gear and used water cannons to quell the demonstrations as tensions rose on the first day of the G20 gathering, as rioters were caught on camera smashing and setting fire to property.
Much of the violence appears to be concentrated in the western suburb of Altona, with videos showing cars on fire and masked mobs trying to break into shops.
A kindergarten is one of the buildings reportedly under attack, while terrified residents have been tweeting with the hashtag 'welcome to hell'.
In one video an entire street of cars is seen on fire, while coloured smoke is seen in another piece of footage.
A huge protest of 12,000 people was reported last night, and tensions appeared to have escalated on the first official day of the summit, with world leaders including Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in attendance.
Police claim one of their helicopters was attacked with a flare, and although the protests outside the summit itself are reported to be peaceful, officers have called in extra reinforcements to deal with the unrest, according to The Local.
