More than 1,000 people have been charged with the distribution of child pornography after spreading revenge porn on Facebook in Denmark, according to police.

An investigation was started after Facebook alerted authorities to a photo and two videos being shared, mostly by teenagers.

The person shown in the content was 15 years old when it was taken, according to The Daily Dot.

Most of those charged only shared the content a few times, however some went further, ensuring that the footage spread hundreds of times.

The age of consent in Denmark is 15, however laws on child pornograhy cover anyone aged 18 or younger featured in either photos or videos.

Police commissioner Flemming Kaerside said young people tend to understand the implications for revenge porn victims, but might "not know that it is also punishable and that they may be sentenced to distribute child pornography.”

If convicted, those who have been charged under child pornography laws could be placed on Denmark's equivalent of the sex offenders register for at least 10 years.

Sharing sexual images without consent can gain those convicted a prison sentence of two years.
