MP Norman Lamb has told talkRADIO it doesn’t matter whether the NHS is private or not, hours after Labour leadership contender Owen Smith accused the government of having a secret plan to privatize the NHS.
Mr. Smith, currently challenging Jeremy Corbyn for the leadership of the Labour party, said the government had doubled spending on private sector healthcare, a claim which was contested by the Department of Health.
Mr. Lamb, the Lib Dems’ health spokesman, says we must "focus on the quality of care" instead of worrying about privatisation.
"I don't think it's simply an entire state monopoly, we should be absolutely robust in demanding the best quality of care whoever provides it," he explained.
"Are we really going to exclude those organisations who aren't run by the state? That's ridiculous surely.
"The critical thing is that we fund it adequately. If someone else provides a brilliant service, I don't want to prevent people who have no money form accessing it."
