'My experience in government ends here' - Matteo Renzi resigns after Italian referendum defeat

Italian Premier Matteo Renzi has resigned after suffering a sound defeat in the referendum to change Italy's constitution.

59.1% of the Italian population voted against the proposed reform, which would have dramatically altered the country's constitution and its parliamentary system.

Renzi's resignation marked a major victory for anti-establishment parties and has plunged the third largest economy in the Eurozone into a political crisis.

The vote will be interpreted as a rejection by voters of establishment politics in favour of populist views, much like the UK's vote to leave the European Union and Donald Trump's election in the United States.
