New evacuation in London as streets around Gherkin cleared

Tuesday, November 28, 2017

London has been the scene of a fresh evacuation today, with the streets around the iconic Gherkin skyscraper evacuated and buildings placed in lockdown.

It is believed that a suspicious vehicle prompted the evacuation and armed police were sent to the scene.

A specialist robot is said to have been seen next to a silver Ford Focus.

A spokesperson for the police tweeted at the time: "The City of London Police is currently in attendance in St Mary Axe (EC3) following a report of a suspicious vehicle parked on the street.

"The incident was reported to us at 11.32am on Tuesday and officers are on scene awaiting the arrival of specialist units.

"Road closures are currently in place in the surrounding area and people are advised to find different routes."

Police have now issued an update, saying all road closures have been lifted and the vehicle has been deemed non-suspicious.

However, the driver has been arrested for possession of false identity documents.
