Migrants have been arriving in the UK illegally in greater numbers than official figures suggest, and showing symptoms of coronavirus, according to Nigel Farage.
The Brexit Party leader released a video yesterday from a beach in East Sussex, which he claimed was the favoured destination for Channel crossings.
Speaking to talkRADIO’s Julia Hartley-Brewer today, he criticised the Home Secretary for failing to tackle illegal migration during the pandemic and suggested the media were not reporting the story.
“Priti Patel in particular, and this government, said they would get tough on this issue - they haven’t,” he said.
“I know we’re going through a huge national crisis with very large numbers of people dying but I think this is something that people care about.
“How many migrants are coming in and just disappearing?”
The Home Office has recorded around 550 illegal Channel crossings since lockdown began in Britain and France. In a statement it said: “Coronavirus has had no impact on our operational response to small boat incidents.
“Border Force and Immigration Enforcement will always have the resources needed to tackle these illegal and dangerous crossings.”
Mr Farage said the UK was too slow to impose travel restrictions, such as flight bans imposed in other countries.
He said: “I’m quite certain that when we have an inquiry into this in months or years to come, we will see that we allowed ourselves to import this disease and the British government did nothing.”
