North Korea is "not an imminent threat" according to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
Donald Trump's Foreign Minister made the comments after North Korea threatened an attack on the US island territory of Guam.
Tillerson added that "the American people should sleep well at night" while praising Trump for "sending a strong message to North Korea in language Kim Jong-un would understand."
North Korea had previously said it is considering a military strike on Guam, which houses a major US military base.
The plan, according to the North's official news agency, would involve the firing of medium to long-range rockets.
Trump, who has maintained a hawkish stance against Pyongyang since taking office, threatened North Korea with "fire and fury" as tensions increased between the two sides.
