Officer shows off skating skills to engage with youngsters

A police officer from Birmingham has wowed thousands on social media after he was filmed performing skating tricks while out on the job.

PC Demetrius Washington from West Midlands Police had been carrying out patrols and speaking to youngsters this morning at Oaklands Recreation Park after the area had seen “a number” of recent robberies.

To help with the engagement process, the officer employed novel tactics to communicate with the youths by donning a pair of skates and showing off his moves.

West Midlands Police shared the video on their Twitter page, hailing the “incredible scenes” as PC Washington pulled off a 360 degree spin and a couple of handstands.

The force wrote: “Incredible scene as our very own PC Demetrius Washington shows the kids how it’s really done. @StechfordWMP have been carrying out patrols chatting to youngsters in the park after a number of recent robberies.”

Stechford Police also shared the video, tweeting: “Conducting patrols in Oaklands Rec in relation to recent robberies and engaging with the kids, Pc Washington thought it would be good to dust the skates off and show them how it’s really done.”

His enthusiasm was praised online, with the footage already gaining more than 20,000 views.

One Twitter user commented: “Engagement with the community is a big part of policing. Should be encouraged not knocked. Great to see this & thank you for sharing.”

Another wrote: “Yep show he is human, police are not just robots!!”
