One person has been killed and seven injured after a masked gunman attacked a church in Tennessee yesterday (September 24).

The incident took place at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch and an investigation has been opened by the Department of Justice and FBI.

Metropolitan Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron said the first reports of gunshots arrived at around 11:15am local time, according to CNN.

Melanie Smith was fatally shot by the attacker whilst walking towards the car park. The gunman then entered the church, shooting with two pistols.

The suspect, Emanuel Kidega Samson, was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds before being released into police custody.

According to Aaron, the alleged gunman accidentally shot himself whilst struggling with church usher Robert Engle.

Witness Minerva Rosa told local reporters that the incident could have been worse if Engle had not stepped in, adding that the man said nothing whilst he shot at people in the church.

The 25-year-old has been charged with felony homicide, but Samson is expected to be handed more charges by police soon. He is set to appear in court on Wednesday (September 27).

Police chief Steve Anderson has said the motive for the incident is not yet clear.
