Other EU leaders are entitled to discuss Brexit without the UK being involved, though it is discourteous to exclude Theresa May from dinner, says The Independent's chief political commentator.

Leaders in the European Union have met without the UK prime minister to discuss Brexit negotiation plans. She also missed out on a traditional summit dinner.

John Rentoul told James Max: "I suspect we will probably agree to pay a little bit [to the EU] because we’ve got all sorts of outstanding things that we might sort of be liable for...and we might want to get something back.

“They’re entitled to have meetings to discuss how they’re going to deal with us, we can’t expect to go to those meetings, I think it’s discourteous to have a dinner afterwards with all the EU heads.

“I think [in the end] most people will say I’m glad we’ve left but goodness me Theresa May has made a mess of it...that’s the typical British approach to everything."
