Thousands of people in Iran took to the streets to show support for the government on Wednesdayy (January 3).

The demonstrators staged a counter-protest after almost a week of attacks on the government due to the economic situation in the country.

A rally which took place in Ahwaz was broacdast on state television, according to The Guardian.

Many held placards in support of the Iranian regime and shouted pro-government chants. Footage of similar counter-protests was also filmed and broadcast from Ilam and Arak.

Following the rallies, the commander of the Revolutionary Guards claimed protests against the regime have ended.

At least 21 people have died in uprisings during the course of the last week. Authorities in Iran claimed the protests were linked to foreign enemies, blaming the US and Israel for promoting insurrection.
