Piers Morgan has hit back at criticism over his interview with Donald Trump last week, telling talkRADIO the critics wouldn't have been happy even if he'd physically attacked the US President.
Morgan sat down with Trump for an in-depth interview in Davos last week. The Good Morning Britain host has been praised for the scoop but some have suggested he was too soft on the Republican mogul, with The Guardian being particularly critical.
However Morgan told Mike Graham and Katie Perrior: "Let’s be honest, the Trump haters wouldn’t have been happy if i had literally hammered him into the ground in front of the secret service.
"Trump haters are never going to be anything but hateful. They hate him too much".
Morgan also highlighted the fact that he elicited an apology from Trump for his recent retweets of Britain First deputy leader Jayda Fransen.
Whereas David Frost took 28 hours of filming to secure an apology from Richard Nixon in their famous interview in 1977, Morgan said "I got an apology out of Trump...after 28 minutes."
Hitting out specifically at The Guardian, Morgan said "Now they've gone tabloid you've got to wonder whether they've got the right kind of personnel for this kind of thing."
He admitted that Trump didn't make a lot of sense on climate change, although the President did say he might be open to taking America back into the Paris Climate Accord - which Morgan thought was the most important part of the interview.
