Theresa May has been the “best recruiter” for a second referendum, according to Alastair Campbell.
The former Labour director of communications said the Prime Minister’s statement, in which she blamed MPs for the Brexit delay, was “absolutely extraordinary”.
An online petition to revoke Article 50 has received some 1,000,000 signatures after Mrs May’s statement last night.
Mr Campbell told talkRADIO’s Matthew Wright: “Theresa May’s statement last night irritated a lot of MPs, and it’s the reason why the petition has gone crazy and the People’s Vote campaign has had a massive boost in sign-ups - she’s been the best recruiter for us.
The campaigner for a second referendum said he believed Mr's May's deal was close to unravelling thanks to her "incompetence."
He added: “She has not reached out to people and she has not respected those who have agreed with her.
“Any chance she had of getting her deal through she blew last night, because that statement has pushed waiverers away from her
“I hope MPs will hold firm, and that the EU does not give up on us, because I honestly do believe this whole thing now is unravelling."
