A member of Russian protest group Pussy Riot has been taken to hospital for what could be a possible poisoning, reports say.

Pyotr Verzilov, a member of the Moscow-based group has been in emergency care since late on Tuesday according to Russion radio station Ekho Moskvy and online news portal Meduza.

Fellow Pussy Riot member, Veronika Nikulshina, said Mr Verzilov had lost his eyesight and the ability to speak. He is currently being treated in the toxicology unit of a Moscow hospital.

The group have posted a message on Twitter, which reads: "Our friend, brother, comrade Petr Verzilov is in reanimation. His life is in danger. We think that he was poisoned."

In July this year, Mr Verzilov, Ms Nikulshina and two other activists served 15-day jail sentences for disrupting the World Cup final match between France and Croatia after running onto the field in police uniforms.

The group claimed the act was a protest against police powers in Russia.
