Police in Germany were called out to deal with a raccoon thought to be dying, but it was in fact just drunk.

A man had seen the animal on a bike path in Schweinfurt, Bavaria and realised that it was having trouble standing up, a police report said.

He told the police that the raccoon was dying in the street, according to The Local.

But when officers saw the animal they realised that it wasn't dying, but couldn't stand up due to the effects of alcohol - a problem most of us have experienced at some point in our lives.

The raccoon hadn't been hitting the booze, but had managed to get tipsy from eating fermenting grapes from a vineyard.

Police officers encouraged the raccoon to move further away from the road and after a few hours it was gone, and was thought to have gone to sleep.

The police posted about the incident on Facebook and said that the animal was lucky not to have been run over.

Officers also said that they hoped the raccoon had "learned its lesson."
