Police in Barcelona have confirmed they have shot dead the man suspected of driving the van which ploughed into Las Ramblas last week.

The Mossos d'Esquadra confirmed on Twitter that a man shot earlier today is Younes Abouyaaqoub.

Earlier, it had been reported that a man wearing an explosive belt and shouting "Allahu Akhbar" had been shot near Barcelona.

The incident took place in the municipality of Subirats, west of the Catalan capital.

Mossos tweeted just after 4pm GMT that the suspect was wearing what looked like an explosive belt, and confirmed that the individual had been shot.

A bomb squad was subsequently called in to determine whether or not the belt was genuine.

Abouyaaqoub had earlier been named as the prime suspect in the Las Ramblas attack, one of two atrocities to hit Barcelona last week.

Within hours of the truck attack on the beachside tourist strip, a similar incident had taken place in the nearby town of Cambrils.

A total of 15 people have died in the two attacks.
