The source of the fire at Grenfell Tower has been confirmed by police as a faulty fridge, while it has been revealed that the cladding and insulation failed safety tests.

Fiona McCormack, a Metropolitan Detective Superintendent, said the manufacturer had not recalled the model of the fridge.

Witnesses to the tower fire had said one resident claimed his appliance had begun the blaze.

McCormack also confirmed the tiles and insulation hasn’t passed “any safety tests” conducted over the course of their investigation.

She said: " Our investigation will establish how the fire started.

"What we’re being told currently by the Building Research Establishment is the cladding failed all safety tests."

At least 79 people have been confirmed dead or remain missing in the wake of the tower fire.
